    thanks everyone for your suggestions. It seems these may be celotex tiles, that are either glued or stapled up (found someone who is removing this type of ceiling and it look identical) It seems there are many old coats of paint on them and that may be contributing to the area over the stove...

    I don't know that putting tarp up would help??? the roof doesn't leak when it rains. the water is getting under the rolled rubber at the very edges of the bldg where I imagine that junction should be tightly sealed somehow. I mean, it *might* also have a small slow leak but you'd have to locate...
