    refinishing tips PLEASE!!!

You're making the project more difficult than it really is. When I've had to match colors I simply obtained small amounts of varnishes, stains, etc. that I judged were close and applied them to scrap wood for comparison. At this moment, I need to change a section of molding. I stained the...

    wiring upgrade question

Dittos. A mere 15a line in a kitchen, particularly with a MW oven is not up to code and is dangerous and antiquated.

    wiring upgrade question

It's likely that after spreading your loads over the new panel, there'll be less near-overloading on the branches. It's a big job to replace all your wiring, but wherever practicable, it should be done.

    Replacing Attic Wiring

Don't see a problem in running your Romex as described. I have used combination devices such as you have and have installed them in recent times. Why would you question its safety? There's one in my office now and it doesn't worry me.

    Wired/Wireless Doorbell

Regardless of the math, I have yet to hear any complaints of false ringing from any of my installations. None of them are in isolated areas; there is plenty of electronic activity around where I've used them with no problems.

    Additional wall outlets ??

Assuming all's well with you electrical wiring, I do not see a problem. I have in the past added outlets and switches in older houses. Hopefully, you'll mount the boxes securely into any existing joists. In some cases, I added a piece or two of support lumber. You need not mount boxes in...

    Wired/Wireless Doorbell

I've had success with wireless doorbells. However, for your instance I would buy a system that is a cut or two above the basic ones such as you'll find in Home Depot, etc. They all are coded much like garage door openers, so chances of spurious interference is virtually non-existant. Edwards...

Every Other Breaker Doesn't Work - HELP!??

It is likely that the main breaker failed, i.e., one pole has. Have you tried excercising the breaker several times? Can you temporarily bridge the dead side with a jumper to ascertain that the breaker is not contacting? Can you remove the breaker and check it with an ohmmeter?

    Voltage regulator problem

bluestorm: My only inclination would be to try another regulator. You might also google search to find a regulated AC supply just for the computer; they are available.

    Rare single-button light switch

jkirby65: If your switches are the old type with two PBs that I'm familiar with, you may find them at a flea market or ask some electrical dealers if they have any old (archaic) stock. They'd love to get rid of them. On this sort, when you push one button, the other pops back out. More years...

    Hot water heater installation

Do not understand what you're asking. Is the heater working properly on the line it's now connected to? Describe what the other wiring is and what used for.

    Baseboard Electric Not Working

djosephs: Start from scratch. Separate the problems. Establish that there is 120v at each heater before connecting. When wire insulation melts there's an unsafe overheating problem. Are the circuit breakers sized correctly and can you read the current draw into the heaters? You'll need a...

    Fluorescent troubleshooting

Daffypuck: There's nothing more frustrating than a fl. fixture that's doing what you describe. These fixtures usually work in lamp pairs. It's possible that two of the bulbs are bad. You can try any two of the four in sequence to verify operation. But it is worth buying two new lamps to try...

    GFI or GCFI trouble

Leelan: I can't be fully definitive on your problem, but I had a similar one. A garden waterpump would not work on the outlet served through a GFCI, but worked normally from a nonGCFI outlet. I checked the pump motor and I found that there was enough leakage current via its ground wire to trip...
