My project continues and as I was tearing off the old deck, I discovered there was no flashing installed on the ledger board. What are my options at this point other than taking down the board or building a free standing deck? The ledger board is bolted through brick. Thank you for the help...

If that's the case, I can't be 100 percent level due to change in moisture levels. What should my tolerance be? 1/8 inch? I'm installing PVC decking.

Anyone have experience, good or bad, using cedar shims for uneven deck joists?

Ok thanks! I think I will go with a single board especially since there will be a railing attached. Will probably do some blocking where the 4x4 posts will be.

I ran into some rot issues on the front rim joist of my deck. The previous owner who installed the joist had butted two 2x8s together to creat the front joist. It spans 18 ft in total. My question is whether or not this is correct and should it in fact be one continuos board. Please help.
