    Converting Garage to Bedroom

I agree with "GBR" as all that is great advice, also be sure to get a permit... You can get a home owners permit and that will require you adhereing to local codes and inspections, however it is best this way because if you ever sell and want to include the new room as part of the overall square...

Good resources to learn to start repairing homes

I agree with the book situation so you can familiarize yourself with some of the general types of repairs. anything "structural" you would be better off getting a pro on, i.e. foundation problems, load bearing walls dipping/sagging, major roof problems, and the like. You can learn alot by...

Hanging the drywall you could do yourself but I'd hire out for the tape & mud and texture, finishing drywall is an art and takes a bit if skill ..The hanging of doors same thing, farm it out to someone who knows how.. The sink you could probably do depending on what type of mount.. The flooring...

questions about moving an electric hot water heater

Go to the city code site in your area and look up what requirements are in place for heaters. having a heater in a basement allows for your t&p relief to drain to the floor.. Others cities and states have different requirements for different applications and the codes are there for your safty...

Help with light switches in a 1957 ranch...

A box of 10 toggles you can pick up for 5 bucks and a box of 10 paddles will run you 18-19 bucks... If you're set on retaining the "older" types, take one out and look on the back or side of the switch and that will tell you what the brand is and then you have a better idea of what you're...

    Paint sparyers

You might also consider GRACO, or TITAN, both have excellent reputations for quality etc.. you can sometimes pick up a used "newly serviced" one at your local repair shop.. we have a great one here in phoenix and I picked up my TITAN airless brand new for $578.00 after a in store rebate and...

drywall repair next to an outlet - advice needed...

you can leave the outlets, and on the larger one, simply cut the hole so it's square and screw in a piece of new drywall,(double layer if need be).. be careful and measure the existing drywall as it could be 1/2 inch on bottom and 1/4 inch on top... I've seen people do that when they dont want...

    Board floor

cedar flooring would also come apart as you walk on it etc. as a soft wood it amazingly enough "snaps" apart.

Carpet installer asked me to install baseboards down to subfloor?

agreed... the base should go down first, then the carpet.. the confussion people sometimes have is, with tile or stone the base should go on AFTER, with carpet before.. much cleaner look.

    possible leak..? -pics attached

I agree, fix the roof first. and if it is a small area, remove the shingles, rolled roofing, etc. and the felt at and around the emediate area. reapply new felt (90 lb.) then your particular type of roof material, apply some henry's (roof tar) at all stages and make sure you are good and sealed...
