    Second Opinion of Sewer Camera?

neal: are you referring to the sales pitch for hydro-jetting? Or replacement? Sounds like youre suggesting jetting may not be worth doing in your mind?

    Second Opinion of Sewer Camera?

The line we're responsible for prior to the city is about 20', but about 60' to the main septic system. My hope would be a hydro-jetting + revising our toilet paper and feminine product habits would give us time to put aside the cash to take care of this with more comfortable margins.

    Second Opinion of Sewer Camera?

Thanks neal; that looks to be the case. I'm thinking of having the line hydro-jetted for the sake of clearing the sludge present, then buying a good snake to have on hand as you suggested.

    Second Opinion of Sewer Camera?

We know it would likely be prudent to replace in time, and actually its on the list of projects to save for, we just werent prepared for the cash outlay at this time (but will if we must). We are having periodic backups when it's the lady's time of month to flush hygiene products. We've put...

    Second Opinion of Sewer Camera?

I've had two plumbers camera my sewer now, and gotten two opinions. Finally had a DVD made. Plumber 1 suggested that the issue is a "massive belly" in the line (which the DVD does not seem to support). Plumber 2 says there's a cracked pipe in the line, but I'm not sure of that either. He notes...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

Interestingly; I've called probably 10+ plumbers now to get quotes. Of those ten, one looked up property lines in the city system and suggested that based on my description, that the responsibility lies with the city. He said he'd come out for $450 to camera and mark it plus handle calling the...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

It's in okay shape. It's old corroded cast iron, but no breakages/etc. I think if we're excavating (with the full length being 18' and the problematic section being 9'), its probably worth doing it all for future prevention. Right now we're actively avoiding feminine hygiene products, and...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

Yeah; I just want to be sure I'm not being taken for a ride. Any job over a thousand or two I tend to get at least 3-5 bids. We had a fence done and I had quotes for the same fence range from $4800 up to $9000; I'm expecting some variance in quotes again here (obviously)

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

First bid came in at $8700. I suggested I handle excavation and he insisted that its a 9' deep trench that he needs to handle shoring for safety reasons, thus wont leave that to me, or let me sub that work out personally. Moving on to the next company; have two more contractors coming to look...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

Yep; fortunately it's an unfinished basement - so only some of my gym equipment got wet. Waiting on some bids; but expecting it to be in the $5000 - 7000 range; which wipes out the bathroom remodel budget for the time being. We'll see. More cost effective improvements will need to take place...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

Long busy weekend. Updates and a new item - can you tell this house is going to be a longterm nightmare/project (depending on my mood)?! Sewer backed up on Saturday. This was the second time in as many weeks, first time was just snaked quickly. This time we inspected with a camera. There's a...

Missing Aluminum Siding - SMALL piece

I have a small section of aluminum siding between my porch and the corner of the home that is missing. Otherwise the siding is in reasonable condition and not really worth replacement. I've been calling contractors to see if I can get this fixed, and most siding contractors wont touch the...

Hi from DC! Anyone want free labor? :)

I agree overwhelmingly; we have no interest in over-improving for the area. We're pretty mid-range so most of what we're doing is for our own enjoyment and pleasure for the time we forsee ourselves here. For example, an entire gut and remodel wouldnt make sense; we'd never see anything close...

Rim joist / sill plate? What to do?

Yeah, on the inside (exposed basement) everything looks and feels solid, fortunately.

Well, the piece that I highlighted (outlined in the red rectangle) is back inside the house further, and it's very definitely rotted (I can poke with a finger and tell). The upstairs is definitely replacement windows though. I agree, and I'll probably clean up / re-caulk those for now.
