Hello all,

Was wondering if someone could help me on this attempt at repairing a gate to my chain link fence.

Now this gate is fairly big, haven't officially measured it yet, but I think it's at least 8ft across, enough to allow a truck to get through into the back yard.

The top rail on this gate is split/broken/cracked in two places, leaving the gate more like hanging and not being able to support it's own weight.

Now I watched a video before on how to fix a fence top rail where they cut into it on both sides slip in a new piece of top rail and rewire the chain link fencing. But my question is if the top rail only has on side of it crimped or whatever you call it to allow it to just slip the end into the existing rails. Then how do I connect the other side?

Do I have to get something to crimp the existing rail on the other end to allow it to be able to slip into the new top rail?

There are coupling for chainlink rails, so you would insert a tech screw thru the coupling into the coupled rail section.

Ahhh, figures. I didn't even know they existed. Thanks for the help.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I think the coupler or sleeve option is the best and easiest option for me. But while looking at my local hardware stores websites I can't see any of these couplers/sleeves being sold. Top rails and other components for the chain link fencing but not the coupler.

I thought about welding it, but I don't have a welder. Even if I did have one all my friends and coworkers told me not to weld galvanized metal because it gives off toxic fumes.

Either way, the coupler method seem easiest, I just need to find one.

The couplers are out there, but like heavy-duty fittings they can be hard to source from anyplace locally except a fencing company. Some of them don't sell parts and some do. There is also a top rail made with a swaged end, making for a slide-together fit without a coupler. Just keep digging and you'll find something.
