I’m sure this has been asked before and I search through the forum but I didn’t see what I was trying to look for. Nonetheless I believe I am having an issue with my ridge vent. I’ve noticed the 2nd floor of my townhouse seems noticeably hotter than the downstairs portion. After clearing away some insulation from the soffit vents I took a look at the ridge and it appears that whoever roofed the house put felt over the vent but I’m not sure as on the right side of the vent as you can see in the picture the top of the shingles and I would assume the felt would go under that and not on top. I know nothing about roofing or what this condition should look like from the inside as I’ve tried to google and had no luck. Should there be some sort of opening between the boards and the ridge cap just covers the opening? Sorry if this has been asked before. IMG_9211.JPG

The underlayments should not be exposed from underneath. Are you sure that what you are seeing is underlayments and not part of the vent?

That I don’t know. I would assume it’s the felt as it feels like fiber strands and not a hard plastic from what I’ve been reading the underside of a cap might be like.

There are vents on the markrt that have a fiber mesh in them. Cobra Vent is a brand that is a woven fiber.

That would make sense as I mentioned you can see the asphalt shingles on the one side and it’s under the fiber mesh closest to the board. It feels very tightly woven, I would assume air can vent through that? This runs all the way across the ridge opening as well for approx 20’-0”.

Yes, air is suppose to pass through. They can become clogged with dust and pollen over time reducing their effectiveness.

Appreciate the feedback! Thanks for filling me in on the ridge cap!
