    replacing threasthold

is it possible to replace just the threashold on an entrance door? The door is newer (steel) than the 100 year-old house. Current T.H. is plastic and broken and I really don't want to replace the entire door right now.

    plastic over insulation?

Any benefit to putting up plastic over the insulation before hanging dry wall? Aside from time and minimal cost, any drawbacks? The insulation does have a moisture barrier, but someone told be that covering it with plastic is a good idea, especially in a high moisture area, like a bathroom...

    Wasp problem..any tips?

What kind of wasps are they? Some wasps, like paper wasps, are pretty passive and won't bother you. They are also considered beneficial insects and feed on insects that cause you more problems.

    Unwanted cats

I have the same problem with the neighbor's cat(s). I tried talking to them about it, but they insisted their cats can't possibly stay inside all the time; besides, I was told, they don't ever leave their yard. Sure they don't... Good luck with any homemade deterrents or even some store...

How do you winterize your garden?

Finally the snow is gone and the garden has been looked over a bit. The soil looks good and black and the earth worms look plentiful. 2007 will only be the 5th year that this spot has been gardened. I'm happy with the way the soil has been improved from the original clay to the richer...

    Garlic!

These are looking good! At least 90% of them are up, some only 1/2", some 4". All are green and healthy. Could be a good year for garlc! As for the '06 harvest, I think we are down to the last 3 or 4 bulbs. Next year we won't give so many away...

    pros/cons for tankless water heater

shovelshort-- good tips, this would be going into the basement. Yes, a tax break is always good. I got a $360 tax credit(out of a possible $500) last week for the new windows and door. And lastly, I've heard from a home inspector and a customer service rep at the local utility regarding...

    recaulking the tub

    I suppose that's a possibility... Maybe 1/16".

    enclosing porch over earth "floor"

I think concrete would be the way to go to avoid any problems in the future. An access hole from the basement would be ideal, but the only poured wall under the porch is the exterior one. The other two sides share the houses 100 year old stone foundation. My access doorwould have to be outside...

    recaulking the tub

Once again, the caulk has started to separate from the surround. This happened about 18 months ago, wasn't caught in time and turned into a huge project (new surround, new drywall behind the surround...) Any one have tips to help me prepare the joint or apply the caulk to prevent this from...

    enclosing porch over earth "floor"

Currently, my 6'x10' back porch sits 3' above the ground and shares it's foundation on two sides with the house, a third side is poured and the fourth totally open. The porch floor is slats (like a deck) and has a roof over half of it, but the sides and staris are open. I plan to completely...

    pros/cons for tankless water heater

I'm planning to replace the 40 gallon, 12-year-old,LP water heater that came with the house and want to learn more about the "tankless" type. Aside from the obvious pro (endless hot water) and con (expense), what else should I consider? Plumbing, venting, gas supply are not concerns.

    Garlic!

Along with winterizing the garden, I planted my garlic. Maybe it was a week or two early, but it's the last chance I'll have until mid November. I planted 10 rows with 7 in each and one row of 6. Included were Music, Transylvanian, Spanish Roja, Siberian, Red Torch and others.

How do you winterize your garden?

This weekend we pulled up all the old plants and put them in the compost bin. We hoe'd down the built up rows that the plants were growing in so the soil was kinda level. Over this we spread out all the finished (and not quite so finished) compost we had. I spread out the rest of an old hay...

    Compost Pile

Hot composting does require some maintainance, how much depends on how quickly you want it to finish. You could always pile a bunch of organic material up and leave it alone for a couple of years. It will compost on it's own, but very slowly. But, I'm guessing we are all talking about hot...

    Compost Pile

I put all I can into the compost, I'd rather see stuff be "recyled" than thrown in the trash. All kitcken scraps (exept meat and dairy) go in, as well as paper towels, dryer lint, and floor sweepings. I've even composted cotton t-shirts, socks and towels. Cardboard is also good. From the yard...

    uderground downspout extensions

So at the end of the long horizontal run the pipe should 90 back up vertically and end at ground level? Wouldn't this act like the trap in your sink drain and never be complety drained and dry? I'd be concerned with freezing and cracking pipes. NYS gets cold. On the one side of the...

    uderground downspout extensions

I need new gutters and was considering running extensions off the downspuots underground to discharge the runoff even further from the foundation. what should I use underground? PVC? How deep should it get burried? What do I do at the end of the run? One side could reach the driveway, the...
