    Old-House Smell

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but we had that experience and it turned out to be a slow gas leak on the old stove. You might want to have someone check it out. Or, it's probably a plumbing issue. So, either way a plumber could help.

    cabinet repainting/refacing

That's an interesting question. I've never heard of that type of "leveling" product, but a good paint store might know of one, if it exists. I did see one good how to on painting cabinets...hope this helps. Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Removing Staircase from Abandoned Victorian House

I also applaud your efforts. Do take some video and pictures, as this will be one great story to show when it's all done. In terms of the permits, I'm sure the code is different today in terms of the staircase run, so you may be better off not opening that door!

Can I knock down the wall ?

I like the opening a door option as well--depending on what your needs are. This would be much less expensive.

    Some tips about home lighting

I would just be wary of the inexpensive solar ones, as I've tried a few and they really don't store enough light to make it worthwhile.

Lead Paint - Old Door Removal

Another way to do this is to keep a spray bottle handle and mist the door every once in awhile. It makes it a little messier, but keeps the dust down. In terms of the mask, you should really wear a respirator, which is much safer than just a cloth mask. Also, tape plastic down on the floor for...

    New boxwoods

Hydrangea tend to show you very quickly if they need water, so I would go ahead and water them if they are drooping. When you planted them, did you mix in a root stimulator (I use an organic one... I think it's from Espoma)? If not, it can't hurt to hand dig around the hold a little and mix some...

Pulling up old carpet and finding hardwood

We have done a fair amount of tearing out old carpeting, but I haven't encountered this one yet. I did a quick search and came up with this link, which gives a good overall roundup of what to do to get stains and things off of floors. Another piece of advice before you go to the refinising...

    help basement leak

Can you get on the roof yourself or look out of some windows to check the shingles? Otherwise I would call a roofer and have them come over and check. I've done this and they typically just charge a service call fee.

    corner windows need help..

I don't think there's enough room for shutters. I agree with the landscaping idea, but if this is a bedroom (or is it a living room?) make sure there is enough room between the bushes and the house so that the window can still function as an escape route in a fire. I would draw it out on paper...

Ideas for opening in living room....

I like the stained glass idea. The other idea is to fill it in with drywall, but would that make the space seem too closed in?

    New boxwoods

I would water them for 10-15 minutes, slow drip, every three days. I'm in Chicago as well and this summer has been tricky with watering--it says it will rain, but it only rains for 3 minutes and it doesn't really help the plants. Also, remember to water the base of the plant, not overhead.
