I agree. If you won't sand the wall before painting I'm sure that won't last for a long time. But before you do repainting I suggest that you do bleaching first. This would save you a lot of money.

I think it would be nicer if you can take some picture of your custom paneling so that we could give more useful suggestion. By the way, we've also painted our custom panel but we paint it with spray paint and we used proper masking so that the other part will not be ruined.
