    Steam boiler post summer

Hi guys, I made progress slowly on this. https://forum.heatinghelp.com/discussion/162691/steam-boiler-acting-up-after-the-summer-help#latest Some very helpful HVAC pros helped me get that boiler back in shape. I cleaned out the Low Water Cut Off, replaced the pressuretrol (pressure...

    Steam boiler post summer

Guys thank you very much for the responses. I appreciate you being responsible with this. You were great help and support in the past, and actually it's amazing to see the same group here still. I was able to get good guidance so far on this topic at HeatingHelp.com...

    Steam boiler post summer

Hi Neal! Hope all is well with the grandkids. Thanks. The strange piece is that the safety relief valve did not go off. Is that not a physical valve that is just driven by pressure? I wonder if something inside is clogged up, or maybe the pressure gauge is somehow not working correctly. I...

    Steam boiler post summer

Thank you, but I was hoping someone here could provide some specific technical advice, at least as a diagnostic step to check. I have a feeling this is not a rare problem and there are only so many points of interface with this boiler. Any thoughts?

    Steam boiler post summer

Hi all, Thanks for reading. My house is heated by steam. In preparation for the winter, we tested the boiler to check whether it's ready. We turned up the temperature, and the boiler fired up. After a couple of minutes, the pressure in the gauge started rising. Once it started rising, it...

Water and heating system stops working intermittently

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer. At the beginning of this year we acquired a low income building as an investment property. This building was installed with these GM peerless boilers connected in series...

Adding posts to 2nd floor baloon framing

Thanks! I haven't yet handled the slope. Looks like the difference between existing floor and new floor is going to be around 3-3.5". There's a short corridor where they meet, I'll just slant the corridor floor for now - it's about 3' long - to bridge the gap. At least until we redo the rest of...

Happy New Year! It took a while to get to this point....

Adding posts to 2nd floor baloon framing

There's just a corridor leading to this space - I'll just slant the floor a little for the time being, to bridge. Today I cut an existing joist from the ledger board, added some 2x8's along the wall, and hung the joist on them: That was a lot of detailed work. Next I'm going to add a new...

Adding posts to 2nd floor baloon framing

Hope the weekend is going well. I started putting down the joists. I'm aligning them with the highest joist. Turns out that the highest joist, which is the very first one, nailed to the studs, is quite higher than the rest. You can see that the new joist starts very close to the...

OK- So I'm closing the top of the bays: And I'm going to seal any gaps with these: Once I'm done sealing the tops, I'll start putting down the new joists.

Just realized you're in Canada, you guys don't celebrate Thanksgiving in November.. anyway... Christmas is coming. :) OK thanks. The insulation itself would also delay fire from spreading up, right? Delay smoke too? Or is it just to insulate from outside temperature?

Adding posts to 2nd floor baloon framing

Happy holidays Neal :) (and everyone else too) Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Update: So I've added the basement support. Then I inserted my ripped 4x4 posts into the bays, and added a saddle at the bottom. I have not secured the post to the saddle yet. But I have managed to nail...

Adding posts to 2nd floor baloon framing

I was going to use one of those steel columns that are filled with cement. What's preferred? And do those have a saddle as well or is it just those plates?

Thanks :) I dug about 10" deep. It took 7 bags of cement to fill. This rapid set high strength cement heats up quite a bit.

I ended up digging 28x28. So 4 rebars each way? In all 45* directions? |/-\?

When you do 24-36 inch squared footings, how long of rebars do you use? I can do 12" rebar 16" hole. The dirt is hard to dig up, I need to break the concrete. Fortunately I have a jack hammer, so it's not a big deal to break.

I think I misread what you wrote! Your footing would be at most 6" on a side... My 12" diameter hole would be closer to 12" on a side... Which is 144square inch... Oops. Now I have to cut those 2' 5/8 rebars into 1'.... :)

Thanks, that gives me a perspective. Funny but I can't find a 5/8" rebar in the local stores - neither Home Depot nor Lowes. Online I get rebars with different designations, like #5 or grade 60. Home Depot seems to have a 1/2" rebar, 12" long, or they come in 4' pieces. I found a steel supply...
