Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

For insects, they make a special foam that is very bitter to prevent them from eating their way through. You could give that a try. If the hole is too deep you could try nailing a small piece of wood partway in as a kind of backstop and then spraying the foam around and on top of it. Roaches...

Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

I was thinking a closed-cell spray foam insulation, but it depends on how much space there is inside that hole. You might be able to get away with just a spray can of foam, or maybe something a bit larger, like this...

Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

How far in does it go? Could you fill it with spray foam?

    CCTV for Front Door?

Skybell is another product that seems similar to the Ring.com doorbell. There are also a number of security cameras that are made to look like peepholes from the outside, so it isn't obvious that you are recording them. Keep us updated on your progress -- I'm definitely interested!

Bathroom exhaust fan. Is it ok to vent it through attic & up to ridge vent?

From what I understand, this is the preferred route in cold climates where warm air exiting the roof could melt the snow and create ice dams.

    My Bathroom Reno Diary

I thought about doing that, but I was worried about my weight on the beam from above plus the force of the sledge removing the lath from below. Maybe that's unreasonable -- I just don't know enough to be sure it wouldn't cause a problem. I might see if I can climb high enough on the ladder to...

    My Bathroom Reno Diary

Thanks for the encouragement -- it gets weary doing all this by myself, so your kind words are greatly appreciated. :) Because it's a super old house and we want to put a fairly large tub in, I'm planning on having an engineer come look at it once everything is exposed. Once I've gotten...

    My Bathroom Reno Diary

At this point, we weren't sure if we wanted to go to the trouble of taking down the ceiling. The main problem is that there is 12-16 inches of blown-in insulation in the attic, lying directly on top of the ceiling. In the end, though, we decided that, since the room was going to be a bathroom...

    My Bathroom Reno Diary

Having never done this kind of thing before, I wasn't sure what to expect. I figured I could get the demo knocked out in a weekend or two. I was very wrong. There were a few things that slowed me down: first and foremost was my own inexperience. I'm not the type of person to rush into...

    My Bathroom Reno Diary

Our story begins with a lonely second-level kitchen, leftover from a time when the house was split into two apartments. Since the reunification, it had become a giant, mostly-empty laundry room. My fiancée and I just purchased the house (our first!) a few months ago. We've got lots of...

    Hello from Canada

Hi everyone, My fiancée and I bought our first home a few months ago, and there are a lot of renovations we'd like to do. I've started tearing apart a kitchen upstairs in what used to be a second level apartment, with the intent of turning it into an ensuite bathroom. It's my first reno...
