    If you really want/have to use wood, make sure the grain runs vertically (when looking at the end grain). A 2x6 (edge down) should hold. 2x8 even better. If it has to be round, use a telephone pole. If you use a telephone pole, you can orient the grain any way you like. PS: No guarantees...

    Why depend on the pull out strength of your fasteners in the wood when sheer is so much stronger. Or, a shackle setup where the pin goes through the beam and the rest hangs down. No fasteners at all. :)

    Thanks. A little more background, it's a 1953 track house, 3 bed/1 bath, slab on grade, (originally) tar and gravel roof, knotty pine ceilings (a full 8 ft.), single car garage. At some point, a pitch roof/asphalt shingle roof was added (yeah, two roofs?!) and double pane windows...
