Preparing footing surface for steel column

Realize that this is a long time after the original post, however I am surprised that none ot the "experts" on here didn't mention expansion anchors. You can find several sizes of them in any good hardware department / store. With them all you have to do is set your pre drilled base plate on...

Concrete Steps have settled towards house

If you want something that is basically guaranteed to last for as long as you own the house, then do it right and do not patch it with any overlay, which by the way is quite likely to crack and or continue to sink with the old stuff or come loose after a few cold winters of freezing water...

    Light Switch Replacement Question

The switch with two wires going to it is pretty much standard in that it controls the power to one light or outlet, or perhaps two outlets that are wired in parallel for instance lamps on each end of the sofa. The one with three wires could either be for a three way circuit or again just a...

how to remove trees that grew into fence?

I do not understand why not just cut off the tree as close to the fence as possible with whatever you have and then just take a wide wood chisel and big hammer and start splitting it off. Maybe hand saws and wood chisels are just not high tech enough.

    Removing built-in wall cabinets?

This appears to be on an outside wall, so at the very worst after you remove the built ins, you will have bare studs and insulation. Just finish it like any other ordinary wall, sheet rock or plaster, paint and trim to match the rest of the room. A couple of days work for an experienced...

    Help me in gardening!

Obviously she already knows that you are not a gardner, so why not tell her that you want to learn and ask HER to teach you. It can take a long time to learn how to grow a variety of plants, most gardeners I know teach themselves through trial and error over time. It will help your...

cheap way to "finish" wall in garage

Agree that sheetrock is the least expensive, but in my garage I am always hanging things on the walls and I find that 1/2" plywood lasts a lot longer. As far as looks, if you are carefull with the seams when you hang it and then put on a good coat of paint, it matches the rest of the garage...

1890 house with problematic kitchen - suggestions?

While removing the wall would seem to be the best answer, how about removing both doors and leave the openings, while you are at it remove the stub walls for the door directly behind the fridge and maybe the stub on the kitchen side of the door into the dining area, leaving as small a post there...

Look in the phone book under house leveling and you will probably find several people in the business of fixing your type of problems. Pier and Beam is a widely used type of foundation all over this area and has been for a long time. I have built houses this way for 30+ years and if they are...
