Hello all,
This is from the air intake on our home heating/cooling system. Several of the grates have the same thing. My wife cleaned these off before I took these photos, so I'm not sure if there was any other type or color of growth or deposit on top of what you see.
To me, the pattern looks like mold, but (1) it's steel (2) the humidity in our home is generally below 50% (3) there's no real obvious other source of liquid. Oxidation seems unlikely for the same reasons.
The vents were very dirty, but just with accumulated "fuzz."
Any thoughts about what this is would be appreciated.
