This has always been an unanswered question to me and I've even experimented myself and I haven't found the best answer yet.

So...
Should you paint the trim first, then the walls? Or Vice Versa?

Also, when painting trim along a carpeted floor, how do you avoid paint the carpet too? I looked for something at the store in the pain section but was unsuccessful. I've also tried taping down the plastic shields but that never quite works out right.

I always paint everything first. Then touch up after it is installed.the touch up is minimal, mostly nail holes and some minor cuts. The trick is , Less mess in the house, all mess in the garage.:D

I paint everything the same color, avoiding the problem. :)

For carpet, squish a thin sheet of wood, metal, etc at a 30 degree angle or so into the edge where you're working, and just move it along as you go.
