    Cheap lighting during construction.

I'm building a 40 x 8 extension on the back of my house. Roof is on. As I put up sheathing, it's beginning to get dark in there. I'm cheap. What's an inexpensive way to light the area for work?

    Changing trusses to regular attic

I'm trying to get clear on what you want. You have a 30x30 ft garage with a roof, but no ceiling. You want to add a ceiling. Just spit balling, add a load bearing beam down the middle, put up ceiling rafters. There's the hard part. If you can accept a post at the center of the load bearing...

    How close is close enough?

LOL! Know it when you see it. I once heard a story about a judge trying a case dealing with pornography. When asked to define pornography, his answer was, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." Maybe in carpentry, it's close enough if the sheet rock contractor doesn't come hunting...

    How close is close enough?

Lumber ain't perfect. As I build things, it seems that nothing ever comes out exactly 4 square and true. Close, but not perfect. I've been building sheds and additions for years. I've added room to houses. Nothing ever comes out perfect. You lay that first piece of 4x8 subfloor and it's 1/8...

    Rewiring House DIY Info

Just use 12 gauge and 20 amp parts. If you are doing the work yourself, the added cost is minimal. There is no downside other than cost to doing this. Unless you house is HUGE and has very long wire runs you are good.

    Finance a home addition

We bought a fixer upper a few years ago. We’ve done most of what we want to do ourselves. Now we want to finance an addition, and have the rest finished by a contractor. Bath room is finished, no kitchen. What are my best options for financing? Can’t do a HELOC, because no kitchen. Been...

    I had a weak moment.

And if you have computer skills, and enjoy woodworking, look into a CNC router. They are basically ran by CAD. It's a little more complicated than that but that's where it starts. You could probably make more money than at Home Despot and set your own hours. This video show pretty much an...

    I had a weak moment.

Employees all over the place at a Home Depot? Where is this Home Depot? I usually can't find anybody at mine. I need to start shopping at yours.

How much is too much insulation?

It's located in SouthEast Texas, about 60 miles east of Houston. I'm nearing retirement. My monthly income will obviously be reduced soon. I expect to live the remainder of my life in this house, hoping for 30 years or so. Low utility bills during those years would be welcome. I am putting...

    Manufacturer Refurbished Tools

I've bought a couple through Amazon. Had no issues with them. But I'm gonna check out CPO Tools. Thanks Joe!

    What is your EDC knife?

I carry 3. Two that might be considered EDC. A Buck Vantage, and a Swiss Army Knife Forrester model. They are just tools I use daily. The third is an Old Timer just like the one my grand dad gave me when I was about 10. He got it from Prince Albert Tobacco by saving wrappers. I have worn out...

How much is too much insulation?

Thanks! Looking at 2x4 with fiberglass, then 1 or 2 inches foam board, then sheathing. I think that would give me 21R

How much is too much insulation?

SO, let's say the recommended R value for my walls is 14. What's the downside to making it 20 or 28? Seems that would just mean lower utility bills. And if I feel like cranking the thermostat up to 75 in the winter, I'd still use less energy than a normally insulated house at 72.
