I know there is oil specific for chainsaws. If I have opened, new engine oil that I want to get rid of, are there any grades or types (synthetic) that I should not use?

Using a portable propane tank for my furnace

I have a propane furnace in my house. I realize that regulations may vary, but have you ever heard of it being legal to hookup a spot to connect a portable propane tank to a residential system that holds the 250 lb or bigger tanks? I am thinking more for emergencies.

Building a second floor on a multi addition house

Our single level house was built in 1930s. Since then at least 2 sections have been added making the house roughly square. We are considering doing an addition and are thinking of going up. The problem is the ceiling heights are not the same. Some are sloped with the roof slope. I do not want to...

    New power head

Mt weed whacker died. With it being time to replace it, I figured I'd go to one that you can swap the tools out. Bang for buck, which brand would you go with? I am in Canada, if that makes a difference.

    Water spurts out of tap

I draw from a lake for my water. A few days ago, water spurted out my tap while the pump was running. It is still winter where I am so, for due diligence, I raised the heat trace temperature. Hasn't happened since. Any ideas what caused it?

Landscaping that I did not plan to do for a few more years.

I have a retaining wall that is about 4 feet high and about12feet long. It is made of garden ties. I have grand plans for it when we moved in 3 years ago. This winter, I am noticing the centre is pushing out.So, now those plans will have to be changed. My plan is to make it a waterfall. Due to...

    Dealing with annoying neighbour

What would you do? My neigbour has been here over 30 years. They are in their 70s. Their property looks good. We moved here about 3 years ago. In that time, I have been cleaning up the place. Our city has a free week at the dump every spring and fall, and that first one, I hauled 10 truckloads...

    Icicles from soffit?

We have lived in this house for 3 winters. It has a low sloped roof. The roofing material is metal. This year, I am noticing icicles coming from the soffit, as well as over the edge of the roof/eavestrough. As far as I can tell, there is no water penetration into the house. Why would I be...

    When to replace a fridge?

We have a 2005 Kenmore fridge. We are noticing some noise from when the compressor shuts down. It still keeps things cool/cold. Our plan would be to sell it to a family member that wants one like it and get a new one. So, how long do these fridges tend to last. The one we have is the one with...

How sketchy would doing this be?

On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is very sketchy and 1 is not at all sketchy, how sketchy would this be to do: I have a house built on shale rock. Part of it is a full basement, part of it is rock. There is also part of it that is gravel on top of the rock. What I want to do is to dig out all that...

    Floating post

In the basement one of my posts moves. It is a 6x6 timber post. Within 4 feet of it is a steel post on the same beam. This wood post is at the end of the beam, roughly middle of the house. The fact that it is loose worries me, but also makes me wonder if it is actually needed.

Chain keeps coming off the chainsaw

I was using my chainsaw today. I was using it for most of the day, going after trees under 4 inches. The chain would keep coming off. After using it for about a half hour, the chain would come off. I would put it back on, and within a half hour, off it came again. Anyone know why it would come...

    Painting an old window frame

We have an old wood window frame that we plan to use on a wall to have a bunch of pictures in. The issue is it is old and weathered with flaking paint. My plan is to scuff the flaking paint off, leaving the rest for the look and then seal it. What can I use to seal it?

    Cleaning a chainsaw

I want to give my chainsaw a good wash before winter. I want to remove all the caked on sawdust and such. Is there a cleaner that is safe to do this with that won't effect the oiling of the chain? I will be using it in winter as well, so the goal is not to remove the oil, just the crap that is...

    Cleaning the toilet tank

We have sediment in our water that filtration cannot collect it all. Our toilet sometimes runs due to sediment collecting in the tank. I have been draining the tank and wiping the flapper and where it seats. Is there a better method of cleaning?
