    Cheap lighting during construction.

I'm building a 40 x 8 extension on the back of my house. Roof is on. As I put up sheathing, it's beginning to get dark in there. I'm cheap. What's an inexpensive way to light the area for work?

    How close is close enough?

Lumber ain't perfect. As I build things, it seems that nothing ever comes out exactly 4 square and true. Close, but not perfect. I've been building sheds and additions for years. I've added room to houses. Nothing ever comes out perfect. You lay that first piece of 4x8 subfloor and it's 1/8...

    Finance a home addition

We bought a fixer upper a few years ago. We’ve done most of what we want to do ourselves. Now we want to finance an addition, and have the rest finished by a contractor. Bath room is finished, no kitchen. What are my best options for financing? Can’t do a HELOC, because no kitchen. Been...

How much is too much insulation?

SO, let's say the recommended R value for my walls is 14. What's the downside to making it 20 or 28? Seems that would just mean lower utility bills. And if I feel like cranking the thermostat up to 75 in the winter, I'd still use less energy than a normally insulated house at 72.

cost efficient wall insulation for add on?

Hi, Long time lurker. I think my first question. Getting ready to do an addon to a pier and beam house. I want it to be energy efficient, but don't want to break the bank. South East Texas, swampland in hurricane country. Hot in summer, some freezing temps in winter usually short periods, as...

    Poor instructions tub install

Installing a new alcove tub in my fixer upper. Instructions say, build a 60 in opening. Drawings show a 60 in opening. I built a 60 inch opening. Tub is exactly 60 inches. Which means it wont fit. Looks like I can move the wall at the foot of the tub with a little careful work with a...

How level does my house need to be?

My pier and beam house was moved about a year ago. I get one free re-leveling from the contractor. I'm not talking flatness of the floor. I'm betting that there is a spec as to how much drop is allowed. Maybe 1/4 inch drop for every ten feet, or something. It's a 40 foot house, my...

Thanks Mother Nature! Sewer line ditch digging.

Off work today. Cool outside, nice breeze. Good day to dig that ditch, with a shovel. Digging a ditch to bury a sewer line from my RV dump station behind the house. Not too big a deal just about a shovel deep, a shovel wide, 100 feet long. Just good exercise. Now the ground isn't level...

Wall behind tub suround, what to use?

Present project in our fixerupper is the bathroom. Gutted, stripped down to the studs, rotted subfloor replaced. Time to put in the tub/shower combo. It's an alcove tub. Going to be installing a tub suround on the walls. 349095 Question is, What do I use for wall covering under...

    Hello

Hello. Thanks for adding me. My Indian name is "Thinks he's a handyman". But you can call me Bill. Wife and I are working on our second fixer upper. We aren't flippers, my job moves us around every few years, so we buy fixer uppers, to keep from losing our shirts every few years...
