1945 house. Doing a complete gut and remodel. The 2nd floor is a converted dormer and currently has two ducts for 3 rooms. The first floor has more floor space and several more supply vents. The return vent for the 2nd floor empties directly into the space under the stairs (just a vent) and then into a duct that travels back to the furnace. Regardless of any return venting necessities, would it be better to run the supply vents up through a wall (have space where I'm considering it) to supply the first floor through the ceiling, and the second floor from the floor? All the vents could be run up the same location and then off to their respective rooms. Once the cieling is backup, the ducting would be hidden from view, outside of the return ducting in the basement.
If the ceiling/floor supplies idea is solid, would the best way to accomplish this be running all the air into a single plenum up to the second floor and then out the individual runs to the room vents? Or, should there be two plenums, one for the upstairs ducts and one for the first floor ducts?
Thanks!
Chris
