A few years back, there was quite a widespread problem with composite materials used for decking. Apparently, the mfg decided to vary the product mix, substituting a lower quality of recycled plastics. My mother-in-law was one of those unfortunate enough to get stuck.
I understand the company went under but was started up again by another individual who is again making a quality product.
But really, when times are tough, people cut corners. I can tell the difference between #2 and #3 wood. I know of no way to tell a good composite from a bad composite other than buying it and waiting a couple of years.
