I use the brush/rod tools also, and even disconnect the dryer from the vent and use a leaf blower to blow all the lint out. Works great !

All above posts are about right.. however, I have had to disassemble my dryer(s) over the years at about the 5 or 6 year marks to access...

My preference over the years was to thoroughly sand, wood filler. sand smooth, prime, then paint.

Had the same issue with a now 24 yo Kenmore. One of the springs securing the tub had become detached. Reattaching it was the fix.
