Is there any other way they could have gotten a 120 circuit with two hot wires without using ground as neutral?

I appreciate the concern. I have lived here 23 years. The garage has had 120 volts for light and outlets with two hot and one ground coming in. I know I should have taken picture of wiring in box before. But the only way it would have worked is if they hooked up both hots and taken out one...

Well I have 120 power, lights and outlets are good. Wired one leg as hot wire, capped off other hot wire and used ground as neutral. Didn’t work at first because ground was corroded at clamp. Thanks for all the advice.

I capped off one of the 240 feed lines. Used the bare ground as neutral. When I turned on power I got no lights. Put the meter on lines and read 80 volts. Must be getting too much resistance from ground.

I was told I could cap off one of the hot wires and use the ground as my neutral. Basically using the panel as a junction box. Will this work?

Sounds good. I have wire and light fixture needs replacing. I’ll pickup a box. Thank you so much for the help and patience.

There are two outbuildings besides garage on same breaker. Is this something that is done in main box or outside

Besides the garage there’s two outbuildings that use the same 60 amp double breaker. I just checked their panels and they have 120 volts

Opened boxes and looked at where ground was attached on switches, outlets and light.

Just checked outlets, switches and light and the ground is used as ground. Don’t know how feed ground was wire in panel.

Why is ground a conductor? Can I connect new 60 amp box and use one side of it? Old box had one 30 amp fuse in it.

Old panel is corroded. Need to replace
