Not sure if there's a more appropriate section for this...

I'm completely befuddled by how the gas usage (and bill) in my house goes crazy every once in a while. Here's a screenshot of part of my bills record:

This is just for the present lease cycle, which began in September. On a normal month we have 1 or 2 Therms, and for one month it's 13!! Wtf?? There's got to be some kind of mistake here. Or a leak?

My housing situation is that I live in a 3-story house with 2 units. The first floor is a unit where my landlord lives. Second and third floors is our unit where we have 6 housemates total (including me). So I realize I don't have control over what the others do, but I can't imagine that somehow people would do 10x the amount of cooking in one month compared to the other months.

Does anyone know how I can investigate this?
 
Is it only stoves on gas or do you heat water, air, dry clothes,etc also?

My friends roommate used to dial the house up to 32 Deg when nobody was home then lounge around in her underwear... maybe she moved in with you?

Yeah, she just cranked the slider on the merc bulb stat and let it rip. Friend said the gas bill was though the roof (I don’t recall the exact numbers, this was many years ago), he figured out what was going on when he came home early one day.
 
My guess would be , the utility is not reading the meter each month . When you get a high bill , is when they actually read the meter & they played catch up with the consumption .

Do you smell gas ? Inside or outside ( less likely you would smell it ) ?

Still , that is not a lot of money . Want to trade bills ?

What is gas used for?
Gas stove only?
What about hot water?
Gas clothes dryer?
Why are the total charges so out of whack with quantity of gas? Do miscellaneous fees vary that much?

Are the housemates running a Meth Lab occasionally?

i agree with all the responses, and in addition, you could ask your local gas company if they would do actual reads for a few months as there was an extremely high bill in nov/dec. they should do that for you as they will call up the bill and see.
 
I work for a gas utility and do high bill inquiry’s A LOT, especially this time of year. All the recommendations above is a starting point. If it’s a ‘smart meter’ have the utility check it for accuracy. A gas leak will usually be constant, and you most likely should smell it. Find out which meter is yours and make sure you aren’t paying for the landlords appliances. 1 therm is not right for a month, usually see 80-100 where I live(wtr htr, frnce, range and dryer)..the fact that it’s erratic tells me it may be a meter issue or like stated above, they didn’t read it one month or whatever. Check for hot water leaks and keep water heater temp around 120 deg. I wish I had that as my bill haha.
