I'm no pro. I'm pretty handy to have around though. I figure, if I've got a question, 1000 other's do too.

    !000 Yippi acya Glenn

Looks Like I have a long way to go - But I'm a believer in karma, and also from Texas - so those two things should carry me far. A CEO once told me that it isn't in the things you are told to do right, it's in the things you actually DO wrong where you learn.

Cutting new floor register holes - Any tips or tricks ???

I understand that you might get splinters - I suggested that because you don't want to cut a hole for the register that is over a joist, or plumbing. By starting from the bottom up, you will know you have a clear spot underneath.

Cutting new floor register holes - Any tips or tricks ???

I've never done that, but I think I'd start by drilling out the corners from the bottom up, and then plunging a circular saw from the top down through the floor and subfloor.

    cold air return

Hi, I'm in contract for my first house right now, and had my inspection yesterday. When I opened the cabinet with the heater, I saw everything connected as normal, except for a flexible 5" pipe just dangling from the ceiling in the heater closet. I asked the inspector what that was for, and...

    Kitchen Countertop rehab...

I've heard that the final surface only looks as good as what is underneath. Preparation is everything. If it were me, I think I'd spend a bit more time making sure the base is as flat, square, and even as possible, so the new laminate would look perfect.

I'm in contract for my first house

I just got back from the inspection, and he was very helpful. He showed me the few small problems (and put them into perspective describing what a big problem would be). All is Very good, some small superficial things, (like changing to GFI outlets in the kitchen, and fixing an air duct to...

    Software for mac computers

Hey - I'm a pretty tech savy guy - does anyone use those programs for homebuilding on their laptops? I have a MacBok Pro, I use for almost everything, and wanted a program that would let me input the floorplan, track expenses, and plan projects.

    Tape Measures

My dad told me (years ago) that the first thing he reaches for on any job is his tape. It's so important to get one that is accurate and lasts. All I have is some rinky-dink plastic thing that works today, but as soon as I drop it I fear it will bust into 1000 pieces shooting the tape...

    San Francisco Homeowner

Hi - I wish I could have afforded to Stay in the Bay Area to buy our first home. Instead my wife and I relocated to Austin. I think you and I are remarkably similar, as I am also a hand's on guy. Instead of a Software Engineer, I was a Biochemist, and I have no desire to become an expert...

I'm in contract for my first house

Howdy everyone. I guess this is the place to introduce myself - I'm Eric, a 38 year old California Transplant to Austin, TX. My wife and I are in contract to buy our first house, and today is inspection day. While the home inspector is doing his thing, I though I'd poke around, and check...
