Reusing the door from an exterior prehung

I've been told I can't remove the door from a fiberglass exterior prehung door and have it work in an existing opening without the casing that came with it. I want to remove it from the casing and just mount it in the existing opening, either with the supplied hinges or my own hinges. Can...

    sealant for Hardieplank

Can anyone recommend a paintable sealant (by brand name) for the end edges where Hardie lap siding butts against wood? Problem with OSI Quad is it takes 7 days to cure. I need something that will be ready to paint within at most a 5 day lift rental. Frankly I'm having trouble translating this...

    install step flashing

Can anyone explain how step flashing should be installed at a roof-wall junction? Are the individual pieces supposed to be sealed to each other? To the roof deck? To the shingles? Also, what is the advantage of step flashing compared to a continuous length of flashing?

    new flashing at roof-wall junction

How do roofers replace flashing when installing new shingles at a wall-roof junction when the siding is up already? This is not lap siding - it's T1-11 sheets.

    Galvanic corrosion

I always thought aluminum and galvanized steel should not be in contact (e.g., galvanized nails in aluminum flashing), but the galvanic action table in the Florida code has them right next to each other (at least Aluminum 1100 whatever that is is next to galvanized)...

    Step flashing and siding problem

Replacing sheet T1-11 siding. Old (rotted) siding at a roof to wall juncture is glued to the old continuous steel flashing with roofing cement. The flashing was installed over the siding. I need to remove the siding and the plan was to gracefully and quickly disengage it from the flashing, slide...

Torque on exterior A/C disconnect lugs

I am redoing the wiring to an exterior A/C compressor and to/from the exterior disconnect box (made by GE). The disconnect box instructions say to torque the lugs to 32-35 in-lb. I've ruined several lugs trying to do this. They have a single slot that is so wide that I can't find any driver bit...

    NM cable 3-wire to 2-wire?

Am I allowed to use 3-wire (plus ground = 4 wires) NM cable for a connection that only needs 2 conductors (+ ground = 3 wires)? If so, how do I flag the wire that's not being used? Can I just put a screw-on splice cap over it at both ends?

    Compression fittings

I have 2 places on exterior walls where I need to disconnect copper pipe then reconnect it after the siding-sheathing is replaced. Both are currently soldered. One is a supply line to my washer that comes up from the concrete house pad and makes a 90 degree bend through the wall about a foot up...

Trimming a window with T1-11 siding

I'm installing site-built non-opening wood window frames in a house with sheet 5/8" T1-11 siding (no sheathing underneath - the siding is the sheathing). I'm replacing the siding around the windows at the same time and I'm unsure about whether to fit the siding to the window rough opening, then...

PVC window trim - putting it all together?

I've been browsing PVC window molding for trimming the outside of exterior windows in home centers and online. I also have a few books. But I'm not finding information on how the various pieces/profiles of trim go together to make a window casing, and what the whole assembly looks like when...
