    Evap cooler is singing (loudly!)

I tightened the belt - that seemed to do the trick. Thanks!

    Evap cooler is singing (loudly!)

Hi forum- My evap cooler is periodically making a loud noise/hum. It's not electrical - it's more of a harmonic tone not unlike the one you can make running your finger along the rim of a wine glass (but louder!). It likes to do this when I am trying to sleep. What's up with that and how to I...

Appliciances dying - something with my electrical system?

Dang it, the btty died in my multimeter, and then I've been on the road, and now I've moved out of state for the summer. Guess I'll have to address this when I get back. Thanks all!

Appliciances dying - something with my electrical system?

Eek! Would surge protectors help in the meantime? Is that what is going on? Were those numbers (118v, 8v) the expected readings?

Appliciances dying - something with my electrical system?

Very likely same circuit. Question No 2 too advanced for me. Huh? Yes, I've plugged the little outlet tester thingy in there and that indicates OK.

Appliciances dying - something with my electrical system?

Hello forum- I've just had my 3rd electrical device randomly die on me. The first was a brand new hand held vac (a nice one!) I plugged it in for the first time, started it up, and before it was even completely fired up, it quit, never to start again. A few months later I had a microwave...

Newbie to put in ceiling fan! - wiring not grounded?

Work has been so busy that even this internet junkie hasn't had time to keep up online. In anycase, here's the latest. It seems as though someone else has already run this circle of grounding wires around in my attic space. I checked all the three prong outlets with a tester, and they all...

Introduction and recommendation for space heater/cooling...

I thought I'd close the thread by saying I had a friend give me a space heater they weren't using. It's the oil filled type, without the fan to jump start it. It seems okay, although when it's cold, I find myself sitting right next to it. However, it was free, so I can't complain!

Newbie to put in ceiling fan! - wiring not grounded?

Yes, I have a feeling I'll be finding LOTS of stuff like that. Not just in the wiring either. Already finding things that are making me scratch my head and wonder..."why???" My plan is to peruse lots of books at the library and then buy the one I like best!

Newbie to put in ceiling fan! - wiring not grounded?

Nah - sounds like something I could do, given some time. I will, of course, be asking, oh, something around 153,961 questions of you all during the process, discussing every tiny detail... In the meantime, I've reserved a few books at the public library to educate myself on the basics. Thanks!

Newbie to put in ceiling fan! - wiring not grounded?

Okay, so I'm totally new to home repair stuff, but I'm about to learn big time (with your help) since I just moved into an older house that needs a LOT of work. First project: ceiling fan/light, since my current light has no method to turn it on and off (aside from unscrewing the bulb)! I...

Introduction and recommendation for space heater/cooling...

Oops - I've added that missing link. Dang, that's a clever little set up idea with the gas water heater, but my water heater is actually outside! There isn't much in the way of closets at all in here. Yes, I am aware that the heaters are electric and can really add to my electric bill. But...

Introduction and recommendation for space heater/cooling...

Hello Forum- I have a feeling I'll be spending lots of time here... my husband and I separated and I moved out into our 1912 (or 1920 - I can't remember) shoddy rental unit. I'm also broke so I'm about to become a DIY-er. I love forums - through them I've become quite proficient in dealing...
