is there really any need to be concerned about drywall expansion where regular houses are concerned? (my guess is that there's not) in this vein, should drywall sections be "butted" up to each other as tightly as possible?

tnx,

On wood products like products like plywood and osb a gap is called for and is written on the many of those products. Never seen any warning on drywall and if you did leave a gap you would fill it with mud to get a good looking joint. So I don't think so.
The only time you do worry about it is in stair wells where the drywall is going up past a floor. if the floor structure was built out of 2x? we can expect some shrinkage so it is common to leave a 1/2" gap in that area and we often see a molding in a staircase for that reason
