Fire Sprinklers

My buddy told me that in some states you have to included fire sprinklers on new buildings being constructed that are over 750 sq. feet, which my garage will be. My question to you all is: How do I find out which states require them and how to obtain them in my garage? I have no knowledge on this, so any help would be really appreciated.

Your local library, town hall, county administrative offices, fire station, etc should have copies of the local fire codes... you'll probably want to get information on other building codes, permit requirements, and other gotchas while you're there too.
