granite, or stone slab steps

I'll be putting in entry steps this springs. About a 6 foot rise over 50 feet. Really a walk way from my driveway to my front steps. Thinking about rectangular stone slabs or granite.
What kind of footing or base do I need?

Virgin soil, shale, clay. I'm in N.E Pa.

scranton- w/b ? i'm from binghamton,,, couple " of granilar road base will be fine,,, however, you may have to realign ea year like everybody else in town
