What's a good way to redo stairs in a modern house that came with carpet on the stairs? I know that under that carpet is rough wood. Can I strip it, sand it and stain it? Is there a product consistent with vinyl plank that will cover it? I intend to end up with a carpet runner over wood or vinyl (fake wood).

Either add the carpet runner and the vinyl as a side feature, or the reverse.

You can put engineered planks over it if you are handy at stuff like that. Would need some matching stair nose. Don't use laminate, it contracts and expands too much.

Post a picture of these stairs.
There's a whole lot of factors involved that need to be concidered to have it come out looking nice.

And are they going to follow codes?
