How to cover, or re-do stairs, removing carpet..

What's a good way to redo stairs in a modern house that came with carpet on the stairs? I know that under that carpet is rough wood. Can I strip it, sand it and stain it? Is there a product consistent with vinyl plank that will cover it? I intend to end up with a carpet runner over wood or vinyl (fake wood).

Either add the carpet runner and the vinyl as a side feature, or the reverse.

You can put engineered planks over it if you are handy at stuff like that. Would need some matching stair nose. Don't use laminate, it contracts and expands too much.

First i would want to know what kind of wood the stair treads are made from. Could be old and crappy pine or maybe un-cared-for oak that just looks crappy. Oak can be refinished, but I wouldn't bother with pine. But there are products that can be used to reface the stairs.
