It is actually a litchen, the same stuff you see on the sides of trees and rocks. The zinc just kills the growth. Kind of like how nothin grows on pt wood. The website www.z-stop.com tells it like it is.

How much do you put on your roof? A thick or thin coat?

Its just pieces of zinc metal strips, the rain grabs some zinc on the way down and it kills the mold. Presto, no more stains.
