Our field bed and tank are higher than the house. In our basement, there are 2 septic sump tanks each with a pump. The lower one is for the basement fixture drains and the second one collects from the rest of the house and the basement one.

In the last day or so, I am noticing the second, higher one, the pump is running more often, even when no fixtures were used. Listening to it, I think the check valve is bad.I do not see any way to isolate the line to the septic tank outside, and the line is about 50'-100'. I know I can probably change the valve myself. My concern is that there is too much water in the line and that once I open it, I'll have a big mess on my hands. How would you proceed? (I'm likely calling a plumber to do it.)

If you shut off the power to the pump, do you have access to the tank to check the fluid levels to see for sure it's backflowing?
