I took my single handle Delta faucet aerator out, soaked it in vinegar for a day and put it back. Somewhat better. but still some crud on the screen. So I bought a brand spankin' new 15/16 male threaded aerator - which looks identical to the original. I can't get either one back in at all. This is really blowing my mind. Came out easily and the first on after I cleaned it went in fine.

A learned practice of mine, with all machine threads is to hold it in place, gently rotate them counterclockwise until I feel or hear a click, indicating that the thread has stepped and is in position to be received, then rotate them clockwise.

Yes, I do the same. Start counterclockwise until I feel the threads, then spin the opposite direction. I just cleaned my aerator and had a dickens of a time until I saw the faucet spout actually bent down, making me have to angle the aerator, rather than true vertical.
