Water softener resin cleaning

I had a guy out to look over my water system. I thought I may have an iron bacteria issue. That is still unclear but he did mention cleaning the resin bed. I have looked around and I see there are commercial products to do that but I have never done this. Anyone worked with these products before and care to comment on the results or any possible issues? Also any substitute products such as straight citric acid or sodium Bisulfate?

Here is an article on the subject. When I searched I saw products available at places like Lowe's, Home Depot and others. I haven't had a water softener since my first house over 30 years ago. So I have no relevant experience to share. My water here is fairly soft on its own.
