Hello All!
We have a window that came from the factory with deep scratches in the glass. I tried the nail polish routine with no success. It made the scratches more pronounced. They are far too deep to polish out.

My next thought was of using one of the windshield repair kits to make the scratches disappear. I'm writing to ask if any of you have tried this and how did the result look?

Thanks for the advice. It is appreciated.
Paul

PS: Why Not Send It Back?
We bought two awning windows from PlyGem. They are wood inside and vinyl clad outside.

One had fogged glass and missing moldings.
It got replaced twice, 4 months in between order & arrival, before I gave up and fixed one up myself by putting new moldings, separating corners for re-alignment & fastening.
It also had knot holes in the wood. (So much for "Stain Grade")

The other was so far out of square that it would not close, nor would it fit in the rough opening, which had 1" clearance all around.
The replacement had fogged glass and one whole missing length of vinyl cladding on the outside.
The replacement for that one took over 4 months to arrive.

The next replacement had cracked vinyl trim, missing inside molding and the frame pieces did not meet. (Like a picture frame with the sides all too short.) Also, it took over 4 months to arrive.

Four months later, the 3rd replacement arrived with cracked vinyl cladding and, again, missing trim. Plus, fogged glass.

Another 4 months, and that replacement arrived with molding that was not the same thickness. The ends of the moldings were not mitered, just snapped off. And, it has the scratches.

Over a year with a hole in the wall is enough, so I replaced wood on the above unit, filed, sanded etc. the parts. But it has the above mentioned scratches.

No more PlyGem anything for us!

Using a windshield repair kit designed for minor chips and cracks on a deep scratch in a window may not yield satisfactory results. These repair kits are generally effective for surface-level imperfections, but they may not be suitable for deeper scratches. Instead of trying to repair the scratches yourself, it's best to seek professional advice or assistance. Contact a glass repair specialist or a window replacement service to assess the damage and determine the most appropriate solution.

Thank You Siding_Door001 for your advice. It's very much appreciated.

Since all of our PlyGem windows have had glass seal and other failures, we chose to not spend any more time or money on these junky PlyGem windows, so I cleaned the scratches with acetone and put clear nail polish on each. They're still visible, less obtrusive.

We're shopping right now for some replacement sash kits to replace 4 leaky, single pane Marvin wood double hung windows that I installed in 1984. We also need a new self-storing screen door since our Emco filled with water and swelled (and stunk!).

PlyGem and their brands have been eliminated from consideration, that's for sure. The Norco Sash Pack replacement sash kits I've used elsewhere are holding up well, but have disappeared from the market.

Do you have brands to recommend?

Thanks again for your advice about the glass scratches.
Enjoy Today!
