Now that winter is coming to a close the big box stores are starting to have sales on their vent less natural gas fire place inserts what do you think about vent less? there were no direct vent ones in stock.

I have one in a rental I owned and was to only be run if the power went off in the winter.
My renter called and said she was freezing there must be something wrong with my Mini Split because it was putting out cold air.
I show up and she has the fireplace running wide open, and 3, electric space heaters running
at the same time.
It was 85 deg. in the house.
There was so much moisture you could not even see out the windows, and there was water running down the walls destroying my brand new paint job.
She had messed with the remote control for the mini split and had it sat in the Auto mode so when the room got to hot the A/C kicked on.
They expect you to crack a window open when running it for make up air.

Ventless heaters are tough for people who are sensitive to the exhaust.

They make me nauseous in just a couple of minutes inside of an enclosed building.

I'm the same way. I was overcome by fumes when I was young, driving a tractor with a cab that had an exhaust leak. Since then any exhaust smell and I get a headache and feeling nauseous. Doesn't seem like a good idea when you think about it, but then again, there are gas ovens in homes.

I have decided to go with a vented one ill have to get a flue liner witch i know nothing about any suggestions?

I’d be skeptical about ventless systems. Curious as to the CO levels, they are illegal for sale in CA and if we come across them we disconnect them. A gas range does put off CO (mainly the oven of concern) and exhaust fan should be running.

I have had a ventless for years and we love it. We run it an hour or sometimes more at a time, but it heats up everything to the degree we do not have to run it for long periods. I have a vented log system in a fireplace down in our basement, and it does not heat to the same degree the ventless does.

For me ventless logs and wall heaters are like an AAV plumbing vent- to be used only where doing a proper vent is highly impractical or impossible. Good for emergency heat but darn few people will restrict them to that use alone- if you've got it you tend to use it. YMMV on the humidity and fumes.

Have had one for several years. No problems whatsoever. Have CO detector close by, (0) reading. previously had one that was manual, hot to adjust or turn off. Current has remote, have to replace 3 C cell batteries once a year, no issues. Chimney has been stuffed with fire resistant insulation, cap on chimney so no water gets in. Very Little carbon build up on interior of glass doors, have 62" TV above +/-18" with extended mantel ,very little heat at TV.
