Hey guys—I don't know if this the particular type of thing you deal with, but thought I'd ask anyway.

We have three exterior lights across our lower deck, controlled by switches in three different rooms. They face the pathway that goes around our house and up to the main entrance, so we often want to turn them on when guests are coming or going.

But it's a bit of a hassle running downstairs, to three different rooms, each time we want to do this. So I'd like to replace the switches with wireless switches I can control from a single place.

We'd like to be able to see which lights are on or off at any given time, too. Does that mean we'll have to go with a smartphone-controlled system? Or are there standalone controllers that show the lights's status?

Finally, if we do use a wall-mounted controller, I'd prefer it be AC-powered rather than battery-powered (which I understand some are). And preferably one I can install in a standard (non-metallic) switch box, next to an existing switch.

I've looked around online, but the variety of these things is bewildering... Can you recommend any brands and models to help me get started? Thanks!

1st of all, since you would like these AC powered, you'll need to determine if and where there is a hot pair, either in the switch box or the light box, because that's where the controller will be.

When you know this, call LUTRON customer service for some suggestions.

LOL. Yes, I've learned power isn't automatically available at all switches. A couple of years ago I installed a light downstairs and carefully ran the leads behind the ceiling and down to the three-way switch at that end of the hall, then realized the leads had nowhere to connect.

Anyway, for this I plan to add onto one of our switch boxes above an outlet, so there'll be juice somewhere. Thanks for pointing it out, though—always good to keep in mind! I'll give Lutron a call, too.
