I've just purchased a home with a gas water heater. It's a Whirlpool and is pretty new. The first night, we were able to shower then last night we had an issue.

No water had been used throughout the day and when we go to take a shower, there is no hot water. I went downstairs and checked it out, the sensor light is flashing correctly, gas is flowing, and the pilot light is on. I adjusted the temperature guage to "very hot" and it worked. We were able to get one shower in.

Fast forward 8 hours as my wife gets into the shower and there is no hot water again.

I'm at a complete loss.

Do you have hot water anywhere else? Your kitchen? Your sinks? Do you have a single handle shower valve?

I believe you have an issue with your shower valve cartridge, not the hot water heater.

The link you posted has a troubleshooting guide, did you look through it to see if it addresses your problem?

As said above, what is the water heater flashing? The flash code will let you know if it is working properly or not.

Bad thermostat, control. Turn the thermostat up, you SHOULD hear a ‘click’ and burner coming on? If you don’t, and pilot is verified, I would suspect a limit(if equipped) or bad control.

Try this: Slowly turn the temperature dial up a few notches and then slowly turn it back to where it was. If the heater kicks on and stays running for more than ten minutes then you probably have a sluggish thermostatic control.

You might improve things if, after a few days of doing the above you turn the dial slowly all the way down to zero of "vacation", then turn it slowly up all the way, then slowly back to the warm/hot boundary or halfway in the hot region or wherever you normally keep it.

Check to see if the water heater is plumbed correctly . I have seen them mistakenly plumbed with the hot to cold & cold to hot .

Also , the cold is suppose to have an internal pipe / tube that takes the cold water to the bottom of the tank . Hot water is drawn off at the top of the tank ( hot water rises above the cold water ) .

I suppose that pipe / tube could be absent / broken ? Mine is some sort of high temp blue plastic .

When you run out of hot water at the shower , check to see if there is any hot water at the bathroom lavatory .

When no hot water is turned on , any where in the house , can you tell if water is moving through the water heater ?

Is you T&P valve dumping hot water to the drain ?

The others are quite possibly correct . Could be a thermostat problem .

While you are messing with this , hook a water hose to the tank drain & drain the " sludge " from the bottom of the tank .

Best of luck to you .

God bless
