I am buying an old house to renovate and sell. It appears that there is a room on the second level that was either original or added a long time ago. Although this house is a Tudor Revival, the room resembles a typical airplane bungalow room. Not too long ago (decades) someone added a bathroom and partially finished the attic area, including a CH/A system. But the stairway is more like one to an attic - 32" wide and very steep. I want to make the upstairs a master suite and, although I assume that the stairway is grandfathered in, I want to tear it out and build a new one w/ proper rise and run. My question is this: is this a Code situation where I can either do nothing or, if I make any changes, Code kicks in and I have to widen the stairway as well?
