Hi all,

I want to replace the shut-off valve under the kitchen sink. I can't loosen the main nut that connects the old v ale to the pipe, because it's all too calcified. There's a buildup of hardened calcified gunk on it. How can I loosen it?

Thanks!

I am not a plumber but I do plumbing work in my rentals.
I would suggest a penetrant spray like PB Blaster (not wd40) overnight. Or try heating the threads. Use two wrenches to avoid damaging the pipe.

Is it galvanized or is it copper piping?

I think it's copper. I sprayed it with wd40. Thanks, I'll try using 2 wrenches after 24 hours.

I am not sure that wd 40 will do the trick. You need an actual rust penetrant like pb blaster or liquid wrench, etc.

Two wrenches and a little heat may be the best choice. Let us know how you make out.

Calcified deposits can be cracked or fractured by simply squeezing them with a channel locks, which will speed the process.
