 about a year ago i dropped some chlorine on the carpet . i diluted it with water(later i learned that this was not the right thing to do). i could not afford to fix the spots then. how long does it take for chlorine to neutralize by itself?

Sorry to tell you.

The chlorine has bleached out your carpet. It is not a "stain" in that something has colored over the fabric. It has removed the color. It has also likely damaged the fibers by making them more brittle so any traffic on that point is going to wear that point down faster than the rest of the carpet.

You can call a reputatable carpet business and they can restain the carpet to match the existing color. It may not be perfect but it should be good enough that only you will notice where the old chlorine spot was. I did this once before myself and it sure was better than not doing anything at all! OH, it cost me $95.00 for restaining a 12x12 room.
