getting rid of ants

We have an ant infestation. Not carpenter ants, just regular small ones. Looking for a way to get rid of them and prevent them from coming back, without the use of toxic chemicals if at all possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The house has hardwood floors, in case that matters.

We use Terro ant bait. It likely contains a poison, but that stays in the containers you set out so no surfaces become contaminated. The ants carry the bait back to the nest. It has taken up to a week before the whole nest dies but that works much better than fighting them wherever they show up.
