New to the forum and my apologies in advance if the terminology I use is not correct in my title of my post.

My wife asked me to make the following shelf that she found on Pinterest:

http://twopurplecouches.com/2015/07/diy-wall-shelf-with-hooks/#_a5y_p=5648098

I'm having trouble cutting the end pieces of the crown molding that go on the sides.

I've but a 22" piece of crown using a 31.6 angle and 33.9 bevel on my miter saw. See the attached image.

How do I cut those end pieces to align properly and be flush?

Thanks.

All cuts are 45* You have to cut it while holding at the angle it with sit when installed.
If you using a miter saw, the table of the saw is the ceiling and the fence is the wall.

From the link you posted;

Question;

I’m trying to make this but can’t figure out how to get the crown molding on the sides like you did. Could you tell me what it’s called or something so I can google instructions on how to do it? THanks!

Answer;

Hi Viv, we mitered corners on the crown moulding to get them to fit the sides of the shelf. To do this, cut the crown at a 45-degree angle, using either a compound miter saw or a manual hand saw miter box. Look up how to cut outside corner crown moulding and you should be able to find some good instructions!

Here is a decent video on cutting outside corners on crown moulding. One thing she doesn't stress is you need to make sure the crown is sitting in the saw at the same angle it will go on the wall. If it slips up or down the fence the cut won't be correct. She also calls it a "combination angle" I've always called it a compound angle.

One way to make sure you get the angles the same is to put a stop on the base of your miter saw to keep it from slipping. To keep your fingers away from the blade while cutting the "return piece" you're looking to cut is to cut it off of the longer piece first and then cut the longer pieces.

Keep your fingers away from the rapidly spinning object. They'll eat fingers faster than you can blink.

Thanks for information and link to the video. That helps! I appreciate it.
