Do you guys think a plastic resin material would be a good type for a shelf in a garage?

Or do you think I should use something else?
 
Unless you're planning on thick lexan, I'd say to use wood (REAL wood or thick plywood, not particle board, OSB, or anything with "engineered" in the name) or metal...

Melamine has a thin plastic layer on it, it comes in 3/4 with an mdf or particle board core. Just keep it out of direct moisture. But it is dense and strong.
