Squeaky Brakes

What does it usually mean when your brakes start to get squeaky?

Most often, that you need new pads. Less often, that something is sticking, needs cleaning, etc.

Right after the squeak comes that metel on metal grrrrinnnding noise I like so much.
There are tabs on the breaks that rub on the discs when it is time to change.
This is the brake companies idiot light.
