As the title says I switched out my old patio door handle/lock for a new one as the locking switch broke off on the old one. I bought the new handle from the window mfger that made the door. It was identical to the old one as far as holes and placement, but after putting it in and testing it the lever to lock and unlock is incredibly stiff making me worry that it could snap again. If I take it apart what should I be looking for to get it more relaxed?

Sounds like your patio door needs some adjustment, or debris is keeping the door from shutting completely. It is all a guess, unless you could post up some pictures.

This may well be a machining tolerance issue, so try loosening the screws to see if the mech. than operates correctly, and if so, some thred lock can reduce the chance of having to periodically retighten.

Is it stiff when the door is open, too? That indicates mechanism troubles or something is binding- often due to over-tightened fasteners..
If you suspect mechanism, take the lockset out and try it in free air.

Is it stiff only when closed? Then it's what the others wrote about debris, or the lock has to be slightly moved up-down-back-or forth to hit the mortise just right.

These are only guesses from afar based on times I've scratched my head when installing a new lock or backset.
