Last night's fun.

That must have been an awesome night.

As I remember, back in '79 when I went to the Magic Castle, We waited in a lounge like area with small high top tables before the show and several magicians came around the various tables and performed close up magic. I actually prefer the close up prestidigitation to the large shows but the whole thing was fantastic.

We went with a 29 year member of the Magic Castle. They pulled out the stops for us. We ate dinner in the private seance room, had a custom 5 course dinner with Fillet Mignon, were provided long stem roses for the gals, received custom Magic Castle challenge coins, got a private tour of the "behind the scenes" at the castle, completed the seance, where glass picture frames broke, we heard Harry Hodini's voice from a Victrola sound machine, and even had a levitating 10' dinner table. We then went to 4 different magic shows, some small, some large. Our hotel was the Magic Castle Hotel, where they serve popsicles on a silver tray 24 hours a day, and free snacks served all day. The rooms were a little long in the tooth, but the experience was well worth it.

The apartment next door was where Janis Joplin was found dead from a drug overdose, so we went to the shrine to pay our respects. We were saddened to see that the Mayor of Los Angeles, Fatass Karen Bass, turned Janis Joplin's apartment complex into a homeless shelter, with 3 armed guards. We asked to see the shrine at room # 105, but were ordered off the property.

OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!

Unless I'm mistaken, You're retired CA law enforcement so your pension is taxpayer funded.

Nope, my pension was built by providing 9% of my salary into this fund for 29 years. I also only get 1/3rd of my "paid for, out of pocket" Social Security, as a penalty for being part of CalPERS.

YEP, that's an option, I cashed out of CALPERS when I departed the city of LYNWOOD, and continued in private, subcontract practice., and never regretted it.

I contributed between 10% and 13% (depending on our contract) to CALPERS for a little over 30 years. CalPers is independent of the state…thankfully! Gov Wilson stole a billion dollars from the fund but then Gov Brown wisely put a stop to the Pension Holiday where the state didn’t have to contribute to the fund when CALPERS investments did better than 7% return.

I also suffer from the totally unfair and un-logical WEP and only get less than 1/2 of the promised Social Security. A true bait and switch.

Wow! You got the full Monte! It’s an awesome place! Your friend must have a lot of money to be a member…it’s very expensive!

How is Janis Joplin connected to the Magic Castle?

No connection. Just a 60's icon, who died in the apartments next door to the Magic Castle.

Participation sounds good, but turns out to be like a CAL WORTHINGTON/GEORGE BRAZIL commercial, where the details are in the fine print, if at all. I was told by a retired city employee, and why I cashed out.

Membership is now $7000 to get in, with annual dues of $1700.
Ok, I don't get it. People pay that to have access to a few magic shows, dinner and the ability to hang out in apartments that look like they are straight out of the 80's and the movie Karate Kid?

Vegas has magic shows, food, and isn't that far.

Members have access to Invite anyone they wish, free of charge. You just pay for the $60 - $90 meal. The dress code is very strict, but allows the gals to wear their sparkly dresses, and the guys need to wear them monkey suits.

Yeah, I don't get being a member. Maybe it is a status thing and tax write off for our rich.

The hotel actually is not affiliated with the Castle, but makes it safe and convenient as well as keeping drunk drivers off the road.

Ok, don't get it... Obviously to each their own in every life situation, but I don't care if I was a Trillionaire, I'm not going anywhere I have to wear a Tux. I had to a couple of times for weddings, never again... That's the very simple answer my brain has for that scenario.

Well, but in your part of the country, a tux, is bib-overalsl and a holes in the sleeves flannel.
