Duct cleaning

Replacing my 29 year old HVAC system. Should I ask contractors to include cost to clean the existing ducts? I don't know why cleaning is needed - whatever dust has built up certainly would not have any effect on air flow - but I see lots of ads for that service.

Having dust inside wont change the air flow but dust is a good place for nasty things to grow you dont want in your air. Plus it can come off and go into the air.

It is a good idea to have them cleaned and if it is all opened up your guy should be able to tell you if they need cleaned.
