Yes you can. Cut a pole the right length for the ceiling and go around and let rest on the pole and wire it back up.

Because of the proximity of the structure above residential suspended ceilings, your local building dept. may have some input, however, generally, something like an eye bolt will suffice.

Commercial, is a whole different ball game.

Bent nails are kind of a hack DIY job and as you can see they have problems over time.
 
Cut the two strands of wire a little long & leave a loop that you can twist for a precise adjustment of the supporting wires because it's almost impossible to cut the wire exactly right.
